Wood Education: Sapele Mahogany

One of the most popular woods we use when crafting our architectural windows and doors is Sapele Mahogany, or simply Sapele. An African wood with many excellent benefits, Sapele is a great choice for many architectural projects, including cabinetry, flooring, and musical instruments.

Sapele is a large hardwood tree native to various African regions, displaying an extensive range of growth. With a trunk diameter often exceeding 6 feet and an impressively straight trunk, branching is minimal below 80 feet. These exceptional characteristics yield an abundance of high-quality lumber known for its straight grain, generous width, and remarkable length per log.

Although great care must be taken when using Sapele, it has specific characteristics that make it ideal for our projects. First, Sapele is a strong wood that can resist weather-related rot; second, it has a beautiful natural grain pattern that can fit into traditional and contemporary homes; and finally, it works well with custom finishing.
